AI search visibility: AEO, GEO and SEO

Being the answer the AI engines cite. The discipline of making a person or institution discoverable and quotable when someone asks ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity, or Claude, across the EMEA region and beyond.

It starts with measurement, not opinion. I publish the protocol I use, so you can run it yourself before you hire anyone: how to measure AI recommendation visibility. Fixed queries, repetitions, explicit scoring, and the limitations stated plainly. Free to use.

Who it is for

Leaders, firms, and institutions that need to be found and correctly described in AI search and in traditional search, not just have a website.

Where it starts: a measured baseline

Before any content work, you get a baseline: your buyers' real questions run repeatedly across the assistants, with every raw response saved. It tells you where you are recommended, where you are merely mentioned, where you are absent, who is named instead, and which statements about you are wrong. Categories are scored separately, because a single blended visibility number hides the fact that you can be strong in one category and invisible in the one that pays. The method is published in full.

What you get

How it works

  1. Define the entity precisely, so engines know exactly who you are
  2. Build the external corroboration graph that makes the claim credible
  3. Produce answer-shaped authority content on the questions that matter
  4. Verify indexation and track where you are being cited

Questions

What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?
SEO earns ranking in classic search results. AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, makes you the answer a system returns to a direct question. GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, makes generative AI cite you in its answers. Winning today means all three.
Can you make me the cited expert for my field in the Gulf or EMEA?
That is the objective, and nobody can guarantee it. These systems are not controlled by the people optimizing for them, and any promise of a recommendation is a promise about someone else's product. What can be done is the work that makes citation likelier: a precisely defined entity, corroboration across sources the models already trust, and clear answers to the questions your buyers actually ask. Then measure it honestly and keep going.
Can I measure this myself before hiring anyone?
Yes, and you should. The protocol is published free: fixed queries, three repetitions per engine, scoring definitions, and the limitations stated. Run it, keep your raw outputs, and you will know where you stand without taking my word for it.

Common questions

A customer asked ChatGPT for the best option in our category and we were not mentioned. Should I be worried?

Yes, enough to check it properly. AI assistants are now an early filter in the buying journey, and being absent from that answer costs you consideration before any of your marketing gets a turn. It is fixable. Assistants assemble answers from what is published, structured, and corroborated about you across the web. If your positioning lives only in a brochure or a PDF, you are effectively invisible to them. The first step is measuring what they currently say.

How do we get mentioned when people ask ChatGPT or Gemini for the best provider in our market?

You earn it the way you earn a citation. Publish clear answers to the questions buyers actually ask, in the words they use, on pages a machine can parse. Keep your facts consistent everywhere they appear, because assistants weight corroboration heavily. Get referenced by sources the models already trust. Then measure across assistants and iterate, since these answers change. That is answer engine optimization, and it overlaps with classic search work without being the same discipline.

Is there a way to check whether AI assistants even know our company exists?

Yes, and it should be measured rather than guessed. The work is to run the questions your buyers really ask across the major assistants, repeatedly, and record whether you appear, how you are described, whether the description is accurate, and who gets named instead of you. That gives you a baseline, a competitor picture, and a list of factual errors to correct. In regulated sectors accuracy matters as much as presence, since a wrong statement about you is its own problem.

What is the difference between SEO and this AEO thing, and do we need both?

Search optimization competes for a position in a list of links. Answer engine optimization competes to be the source a model uses when it writes the answer, where there is no list and often only one or two names. The underlying work overlaps, since both reward clarity, structure, and credibility, but the target differs and so does the measurement. You need both for now. Traditional search still sends traffic, and assistants increasingly decide who gets considered at all.

Is this worth doing for a small business, or is it only for large companies?

It is often better value for a small business, because assistants do not weight advertising budget. They weight clarity, consistency, and corroboration, and a focused specialist can win a specific question against a large generalist. Scope it narrowly. Take the handful of questions your best customers ask before they buy, and answer them better than anyone else in your market does. That is a small piece of work with a long tail. Pricing is scoped to the engagement.
